In Newfoundland and Labrador, the remediation of impacted sites is overseen by the Impacted Sites Management Section (ISMS) in the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment. Please refer to the ISMS website for information on the most recent procedures and guidelines for completing environmental site assessment and remediation work in accordance with provincial requirements, as well as useful information regarding Property Environmental Searches (often for a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment), provincially-owned impacted sites the ISMS has managed, and fees associated with ISMS services.
In Newfoundland and Labrador, site professionals must be registered with the Department (this is completed through the ISMS). A list of companies with registered site professionals is maintained on the ISMS website.
In any remediation effort, early consultation with the appropriate government department is strongly recommended to ensure all required criteria and procedures are addressed.
