Ecological Screening Protocol for Petroleum Impacted Sites in Atlantic Canada: Scientific Rationale

A scientific rationale to support the Adoption/Development of Tier 1 Ecological Screening Levels for Soil, Surface Water, Groundwater and Sediment. This document provides a summary of the scientific rationale and approach used in the development of ecological screening levels for petroleum hydrocarbons in soil, groundwater, surface water and sediment. In many cases, the approach relied on the combined application of empirical toxicity data, predictive models and criteria derived by other jurisdictions. As these sources evolve, it is anticipated that the toxicity benchmarks will be revisited and revised where necessary.
